Classy Mother's Day Flower and Cake Bundle from Fav Florist

No lady would reject flowers, no matter how much they say it is a waste of money. This Mother's Day, thank your mum with a beautiful Flower and Cake bundle from Fav Florist!

Preserved Flower Dome

When local florist Fav Florist approached me, I was instantly drawn to their preserved flower domes.

Fresh flowers may be beautiful, but I really dislike the idea of seeing them wither and throwing them out after a few days. If sustainability is important to you and your mum too, these flower domes are a great choice since they last forever. I am sure mum wants to proudly display this to her friends and relatives when they visit.

A special feature of Fav Florist's flower dome is the LED lights in the dome, operated using AAA batteries. They really illuminate the beauty of these flowers when it is turned on at night.

Mystic Red Flower Dome

Featured in this article is one of the signatures in Fav Florist's preserved flower dome collection - Mystic Red.

I really love how classy it looks when the lights are turned on. Importantly, the classic red and green colours mean that this preserved flower dome would be a truly timeless gift.

Cake Bundle

A celebration would be missing something if there is no cake. Fav Florist offers a flower cum cake package, and I think this is really convenient!

The florist pairs up with local cake shop Whyzee, and their locally-inspired flavours are definitely noteworthy of mention - e.g. D24 Durian Chocolate Fudge, Yuzu Osmanthus, Ondeh Ondeh.

MSW Durian Cake

Featured below is Whyzee's premium 9-inch MSW Durian Cake.

A perfect cake for mums love durian, it is made up of 2 thick layers of Mao Shan Wang durian flesh layered between vanilla sponge cakes. While the durian smell is not overwhelmingly strong, I like how I could see real durian flesh used in the cake. Even their frosting is iced with durian.

This cake needs to be stored in the freezer and thawed for 30 minutes before eating. If you like it super cold and a bit icey, it actually tastes like ice cream!

Flowers and Bundles

Fav Florist offers fresh flower bouquets, and bundles with cake and/or balloons are available. The flower and cake bundles start from S$82.90, while the flower and balloon bundles start from S$90.90.

Free delivery is available for all flower bouquets and a 1-hour urgent Express Delivery for urgent requests.

[Travels] 5 Must-Visit Stops for the Foodie at Haji Lane and Kampong Glam

(Updated: Jun 2018)

Mention Haji Lane to any Singaporean, and he/ she would certainly think of the alleys with psychedelically-coloured walls, cool hangout shops selling vintage items and clothes, and countless restaurants and pubs. I love the quirky hipster shops there and if you are a tourist, it's nice place to drop by to find unique gifts for friends back home.

Exploring Singapore's streets under our tropical weather can be a little daunting, so I always make sure that I add food stops to my list before I head out. Here are my 5 must-visit recommendations for the foodie if you are exploring Haji Lane and the surrounding Kampong Glam area!

1) Symmetry

If you have passed by Victoria Street on the bus, you may have noticed the unassuming side view of Symmetry with white walls and green doors. However, once you step into this cafe, you will realise that it is actually really cosy with warm wood-based interiors. This cafe draws inpiration from both the Australian casual dining culture and French cuisine, and is famous for its weekend brunch and special Monday You Bastard menu.

Before starting the day of exploration, I would recommend that you fill your stomach here first. Helmed by a Sydney Le Cordon Bleu chef, it serves really good brunch and coffee. How about the Symmetry Eggs Benedict with a Flat White? Yums. Definitely #noregrets!

Symmetry | 9 Jalan Kubor. Singapore 199206.

2) Moosh Softserve

A post shared by Moosh Softserve (@moosh.sg) on

After brunch, head down a few streets past the majestic Sultan Mosque and you will reach the famous Haji Lane. After taking all those touristy shots, take respite from the heat with a cool (halal) soft serve from Moosh! With regular-sized cups priced at less than S$5 each, this makes for a really affordable dessert and of course another one for the Instagram wall. Go local and take their signature Ondeh Ondeh flavour. With generous toppings of dessicated coconut, pandan sauce and toasted coconut flakes, it's simply... sedap!

Moosh Softserve | 44 Haji Lane. Singapore 189237.

3) Hajah Maimunah Restaurant & Catering

Source

Kampong Glam is synonymous to the majestic Sultan Mosque. After visiting this important beacon for the Muslims in Singapore, I would recommend that you extend this cultural experience with some traditional Malay-Indonesian food at Hajah Maimunah. It was awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2016, so rest be assured, this Halal casual restaurant serves top tier nasi padang at pocket-friendly prices.
Source

Nasi padang refers to a meal of hot steamed rice with your choice of usually 3 (or more) pre-cooked dishes. Get ready to be spoilt for choice by the range of more than 40 dishes available here. I highly recommend the Tahu Goreng (giant fried tofu with omelette) and juicy Sundanese Grilled Chicken!

Hajah Maimunah Restaurant & Catering | 35 Haji Lane. Singapore 189228.

4) Fika Swedish Cafe & Bistro

If you prefer some exotic fare instead, Fika Swedish Cafe & Bistro would be your answer. It was set up by a Malay-Singaporean ex-graphic designer with her Swedish husband, so it serves really authentic Swedish food.

The Homemade Meatballs, served with lingonberry jam, is their must-try and known by many to be Singapore's best Halal Swedish meatballs. Unlike Ikea's meatballs, I find Fika's crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside and importantly, has no strange aftertaste (am I the only one who feels this after having Ikea's meatballs?). If you are here with children, the Mushroom and Cheese Crepe, with generous fillings of fresh mushrooms and cheese (okay I know that's obvious), is a good choice!

Fika Swedish Cafe & Bistro | 257 Beach Road. Singapore 199539.

5) Rich and Good Cake Shop

Before leaving Kampong Glam, do drop by Rich and Good Cake Shop to bring home their famous Swiss Rolls. Its shopfront and cake packaging may be simple, but don't be fooled. A popular bakery among Singaporeans and tourists alike, long queues are often spotted here (even though it's manned by a grumpy auntie who is just as famous as these swiss rolls). Be there early as it closes when all the cakes are sold out!

The sponge cake in these swiss rolls is soft and fresh. Unlike swiss rolls sold in neighbourhood shops which reek of cheap cream, the fillings in these famous rolls are generous and simply ooze out with an OMPH. Kaya and Durian are their signature flavours. Btw, I like to freeze my cake first, so it feels like I am eating ice cream roll! Read more in my earlier review here.

Rich and Good Cake Shop | 24 Kandahar Street. Singapore 198887.

Conclusion

Overall, Haji Lane and the surrounding Kampong Glam offer a glimpse of Singapore's rich Malay history and trendy culture. Whether you are looking for traditional Turkish lamps, edgy clothes or Instagram-worthy colourful walls to camwhore at, there is something for everyone here.

I shall leave you with more photos of this fun neighbourhood!

[Review] Parent-Child Organic Cupcake Baking cum Decoration Workshop at Bud of Joy Organic Bakery & Store

What were one of the most memorable things you did over the school holidays?

For us, we joined the Parent-Child Organic Cupcake Baking and Decoration Workshop at Bud of Joy Organic Bakery & Store and it was a really enriching experience!

Bud of Joy Organic Bakery & Store

Bud of Joy Organic Bakery & Store, located 5 minutes’ walk away from MacPherson MRT, is a simple, down-to-earth bakery providing nutritious organic baked good and baking classes.

I like how this bakery prides itself in using ingredients that are safe from pesticides, chemical fertilisers, growth hormones, antibiotics, artificial sweeteners, colours and bread improvers. Everything is so wholesome!

Organic Cupcake Baking and Decoration Workshop

I had told C about this workshop one week before the session and she was excitedly reminding me all week about it – every day. Her latest ambition (read: obsession) is to be a baker when she grows up, so every morning till the day of the class, I was greeted with “Mommy mommy, are we going for the class today?”

The Organic Cupcake Baking and Decoration Workshop is a parent-child session and suitable for children ages 4 to 12 years old. The class size is kept small, at the maximum of 5 pairs of adults and children.

We learnt how to make the cupcake batter from scratch, bake the cupcake and decorate them.

True to the bakery’s ethos, the ingredients used were organic and natural. For instance, we used organic unbleached flour and the colour dyes were freshly extracted from dried blue pea flowers and beetroot.

The session started with a safety briefing and I felt that it was a really important reminder for the children to be aware of their surroundings.

The workshop continued in two phases: (a) cake batter demonstration and hands-on preparation; (b) buttercream demonstration and hands-on decoration.

(A) Cake Batter Demonstration and Hand-On Preparation

Chef demonstrated the steps to us, patiently also answering the various questions we had.

Using the recipe hand-outs, we then proceeded to our respective work-tables to weigh out the respective ingredients and make our own batter. During the session, chef and his assistant also came around to assist us.

After the batter was ready, each pair then filled the batter into 4 muffin cups and they proceeded to be baked into the ovens.

(B) Buttercream Demonstration and Hands-on Decoration

Whilst our muffins were being baked, chef demonstrated to us how to make the buttercream.

For the children, it was an eye-opener seeing the colours extracted from the dried blue pea flowers and fresh beetroot, and then mixed into the buttercream! It was also an opportunity for us to learn about colours.

As chef had prepared enough buttercream to be split for everyone in the class, the only hands-on session thereafter was the cupcake decoration.

Conclusion

Overall, I found this baking cum cupcake decoration workshop to be a great bonding activity for C and I, and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

I like how we were taught to use natural colourings for the buttercream and the ingredients used were healthy and wholesome. For her, she definitely had a blast fulfilling her dream to be a baker and of course baking and decorating beautiful cupcakes for the whole family!

I also have to commend chef for being very patient and he could definitely engage the children well. The children were kept wide-eyed throughout the 2-hour session.

I also liked that attending a class meant that I didn't have to do all the washing and clean-up thereafter. Baking with children can be a really messy affair!

The whole flow of the workshop was also well thought through and time-efficient. For instance, while waiting for the cupcakes to be baked, the buttercream was being demonstrated.

When we were back home, C told everyone how she used the blue pea flowers and beetroot to make the colours on her pastel-coloured cupcakes and wanted us to do them together at home next time.

Yes dear, I would love to! But we have to do the clean-up together, okay? ;)

[Lifestyle] Top 25 Children's Baking and Cooking Classes this June 2017 Holidays

Credits: Creative Culinaire

The school term is finally over. Thinking of something exciting to do this June holidays? Let's have fun in the kitchen!

To me, baking or cooking is not only about methodologically adding ingredients together to form a dish, but also creativity, confidence, adaptivity and execution.

Andrea Conventry, a Montessori educator, views "food preparation (as) a great practical life activity (where) children learn self care as they wash their hands, develop independence and improve fine motor skills. They also practise grace and courtesy as they offer the food to share with their friends".

We scoured around to find the Top 25 Children's Baking and Cooking classes for this holidays. From parent-child classes to bootcamps, there is surely something to awaken the junior chef in every child.

Do look out for our Exclusive Promo Codes below, because we managed to get some great discounts for you!
